Who we work with

We believe in partnership, and work with everyone from individual horse owners to sport regulators to international institutions to improve equine welfare in both policy and practice.

Owners and keepers 

We work with horse owners in the UK to help them provide their equines with a good life.  Our national network of Field Officers provide one-to-one support, as does our Advice Line.  We also offer online educational advice on a range of topics and through our webinars.   

Through our international programmes, our local partner organisations in Africa, Latin America and Asia work directly with horse owners to share horsecare knowledge and skills.

Communities 

We work with communities to help understand their equine welfare challenges and agree solutions. These include local communities, communities within the sport and leisure world and others such as commoners or members of the Gypsy, Roma and Travelling community. We also work with equid-owning communities in low- and middle-income countries who depend on their animals for their transport and livelihoods, where we often train local service providers who play a key role in improving equine welfare such as farriers, saddlers and vets.  

Governments and agencies 

Since our foundation we have worked with governments and agencies to inform policy, standards and legislation.  We help provide evidence to identify gaps or shortcomings in legislation or its implementation, and support the development of measures to address these.  We have helped to influence more than 50 pieces of legislation in the UK and European Union alone. 

Sport regulators  

We have long worked with sport regulators as independent welfare advisors, supporting them in setting high standards for equine welfare. We have a decades-long relationship with the International Equestrian Federation (FEI), and also advise the International Horse Sports Confederation (IHSC) and the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), as well as providing informal advice to other national federations and associations. 

Institutions 

Working with other like-minded organisations, we help shape equine welfare standards at international institutions, including the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), the World Bank, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the United Nations (UN).
