Agria has committed to supporting World Horse Welfare between 2025 and 2027 in the three-year run up to our centenary – where the charity will celebrate 100 years of improving equine welfare in the UK and internationally.
Building on the success of Agria’s support of the World Horse Welfare conference in November 2024, the new partnership will also help our work rescuing and rehabilitating horses in Britain, our work with horse sport to improve welfare and so strengthen its social licence, and activities around our centenary celebrations in 2026 and 2027.
Agria’s support provides a significant boost in helping to protect the future of equine welfare and the involvement of horses in sport for generations to come.
Our Welfare Concern Report service gives a direct contact point for concerned members of the public to immediately report horses in distress or situations which could deteriorate – providing a lifeline between horses in need, and our care. Our 16 highly experienced Field Officers then attend and investigate potential welfare cases, working with the owners to improve conditions or where necessary to remove the animals to one of our four rescue and rehoming centres in Britain. So many of the horses that we rescue from dire situations go on to lead wonderful lives in new homes.
Social licence is a way to describe public acceptance of an activity. When an activity has society’s approval or acceptance, it is said to have a ‘social licence to operate’. The social licence of horse sport is being challenged as questions are increasingly being raised about the involvement of horses in sport due to concerns about their welfare and safety.
World Horse Welfare has been championing the need for horse sport to be proactive in improving policies, practices and communications around welfare to turn social licence into an opportunity. We support the responsible involvement of horses in sport, so long as their welfare is truly put first. We work with regulators and other industry bodies to advise on how horses’ welfare can be protected throughout their lives and after their career in sport – from birth to death. Significant improvements have been made but there is undoubtedly more to do.
As well as supporting key areas of our work, Agria and their team will have a key involvement in World Horse Welfare events and campaigns throughout the partnership, together with employee engagement and hands on volunteering at our four farms.
Vicki Wentworth, Managing Director, Agria Pet Insurance said:
“Horses enrich our lives in so many ways, and we want to return that generosity by giving them the best lives possible. We care deeply about listening to our horses and sharing the accountability for their wellbeing. Agria is therefore so proud to be partnering with World Horse Welfare and supporting the invaluable work they do to for the welfare of our equine friends.”
