As a member of the Voluntary Initiative on the welfare of Equidae under the EU Platform on Animal Welfare, we helped develop guidance for tourism operators and competent authorities on responsible tourism involving equines. This document aims to help raise awareness of the best practice around the use of horses, donkey and mules for touristic activities, to help ensure that their welfare is protected.

In many holiday destinations, working equids are employed in tourist activities such as tours, rides or treks. Whilst in other locations, these animals are the only means of transport available for a number of reasons including the geography of the terrain. Unfortunately, these working equids are often not covered by animal welfare legislation so they are not protected, and their welfare can be put at risk.
