Why we work here?

Working equines in Cuba often suffer from poor body condition, wounds and back problems as a result of their work pulling heavy carts. One of the key problems in Cuba is the lack of good equine veterinary provision; there are few medications available and unfortunately many vets lack practical equine experience.

What we are doing?

The political system in Cuba makes our work here a little different to other countries. We send vets and farriers from Spain, Haiti, El Salvador and Guatemala to train their counterparts in Cuba.

We have to focus on providing realistic training to suit the medication, tools and materials available in the country, otherwise they will not be able to utilise the training.

Meet a team member

Macabeo trained as a farrier in 2004 with the support of World Horse Welfare in his home country of Guatemala. He trains farriers in multiple World Horse Welfare projects in Central America. In 2019 he ran the first farrier training session in Cuba, training farriers to make tools and trim horses feet to the correct shape. The Duchess of Cornwall even visited the training session and
